FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. WHAT IS A FOOD SWAP & SOCIAL?
A. A food swap allows attendees to share homemade or homegrown foods with each other. It's a great opportunity to share favorite foods, practice or perfect recipes, try new foods, and learn new recipes. No money changes hands at a food swap, and all items are homemade. After swapping, participants are welcome to socialize, have a drink, swap recipes, share and try foods, and meet each other.
Q. HOW MUCH FOOD SHOULD I BRING?
A. It’s up to you — it depends on how much you want to make and bring home. We suggest starting with about 4-6 items to swap (i.e. 4 jars of jam, containers of soup, etc.). After that, you'll get a sense of how much to bring and how much you want to go home with. We also suggest each swap item be enough for 2 adult servings (i.e. 2-3 cups of soup, 2-3 muffins, a small loaf of bread, several cookies) so that swaps are pretty even.
Q. WHO CAN ATTEND?
A. Everyone is welcome. At most swaps participants under 18 are welcome, though some events may be held in bars and breweries that have age restrictions.
Q. WHAT IF I HAVE FOOD ALLERGIES?
A. There are typically a wide variety of foods available reflecting the wide range of participants’ diets and preferences, including vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free items. We always recommend that participants clearly label all foods and ingredients — when in doubt, simply ask.
Q. HOW DO I KEEP FOOD HOT/COLD?
A. Swap locations will not have heating or cooling equipment available for participants, so it’s up to you to keep foods in a cooler/on ice and to label them with proper cooling/cooking instructions. For canned/jarred foods, please make sure you are following all USDA recommendations and guidelines. We simply want everyone to swap safely.
Q. CAN I BRING ALCOHOL/ALCOHOL-INFUSED ITEMS?
A. Absolutely. Home-brewed and infused beers, ciders, spirits, wines, and bitters are popular swap options. Please make sure all items are labeled appropriately and ensure that all underage participants don’t have access to alcoholic beverages.
Q. WHAT IF NOBODY WANTS TO SWAP with me?
A. This is one of the most common fears we hear from new swappers and you can rest assured that it simply doesn’t happen. There are always a wide range of foods and participants and everyone goes home with new foods to try. After your first swap you’ll see how welcoming everyone is and you’ll likely be assuring your own friends and family how much fun they’ll have if they join you in the future.
